FREIGHT TERMS, IN PLAIN LANGUAGE

Know the term.
Understand the next step.

A working vocabulary for container and road-freight conversations. Ask the team how a term applies to your particular shipment.

Accessorial

A charge for an additional service or condition outside the base transportation scope, as defined by the agreement.

BCO / cargo owner

Beneficial cargo owner: the party with a beneficial interest in the cargo, often the importer or exporter.

BOL / bill of lading

A transport document identifying the shipment and relevant carriage details. Requirements depend on the movement.

Chassis

A wheeled frame used to transport a container by road.

Drayage

A truck movement that connects a container or freight with a port, rail facility, warehouse, or other location.

EIR / interchange receipt

A record associated with the exchange of equipment, often used to document a container or chassis handoff.

Empty return

The movement and return of an unloaded container to the location specified by the equipment provider.

Free time / last free day

An allowed period and its final day before specified charges may begin. Confirm the issuer, date, and terms.

Live unload

A delivery where the driver and equipment remain while the freight is unloaded, subject to the agreed plan.

Drop & pick

An arrangement in which equipment is left at a location and collected later, where available and agreed.

POD / proof of delivery

Documentation of a delivery handoff; the required form and details depend on the shipment.

Pre-pull

Picking up a container before the planned final delivery and holding it for a later move, when arranged.

Transloading

Transferring cargo from one form of transport equipment to another, with handling and facility requirements reviewed.

TWIC

Transportation Worker Identification Credential. See TSA for official eligibility and access information.

3PL

Third-party logistics provider. The specific services and legal role depend on the provider and the agreement.

Freight broker

A party that arranges transportation by a carrier. Serving a broker does not make the trucking company a broker.

Freight forwarder

A provider coordinating freight movements; actual responsibilities and required authorities vary by service and transport mode.

Cutoff

The deadline for a specified activity, such as receiving an export container. Confirm the relevant terminal and booking instructions.

General explanations, not tariff definitions or legal advice. Review the documents and official requirements relevant to the shipment.
