KNOW WHAT TO ASK BEFORE THE MOVE

Not all container charges
mean the same thing.

A clear quote defines the transportation scope and explains which additional charges may apply. Start by identifying who sets the terms and which clock is running.

01

Demurrage

Often refers to charges tied to cargo or a container remaining at a terminal beyond allowed free time. Use the issuer’s tariff or contract to determine the applicable meaning and dates.

Ask before booking

Who issued the free-time deadline, when does charging begin, and what rate applies?

02

Detention / equipment use

Often refers to use of ocean-carrier equipment outside the terminal beyond allowed free time. Truck waiting may also be called detention in trucking agreements—clarify which is meant.

Ask before booking

Is this container equipment time, driver waiting time, or another charge?

03

Chassis usage

The wheeled equipment used to move a container can carry usage or rental charges depending on the arrangement.

Ask before booking

Which chassis provider and billing period apply? Are split or repositioning moves included?

04

Driver waiting

Time at pickup, a gate, loading, or receiving may create waiting charges under the agreed terms.

Ask before booking

What waiting allowance, time records, approval process, and rate apply?

05

Pre-pull & storage

A container may be picked up before its delivery appointment and held, subject to availability and agreement. Moving it and holding it are separate elements to discuss.

Ask before booking

Where will it be held, for how long, and which moves and storage charges are included?

06

Additional moves & handling

A redelivery, chassis split, extra stop, transload, or changed return location can add work beyond the original movement.

Ask before booking

What changed, who approves it, and how is it documented and priced?

Build a written picture of the move.

Ask for included services, possible accessorials, free-time assumptions, approval contacts, and supporting records. These explanations are general; the actual tariff, contract, quote, and shipment instructions govern. This page does not publish a Paperboie tariff or calculate a bill.
